Essential Job Duties
Join our Athletics Human Resources team and play a key role in supporting the people, programs, and operations that drive a successful Division I athletics department. Reporting to the Assistant Athletic Director for Human Resources, this position serves as a trusted HR advisor to department leadership, coaches, supervisors, and staff while providing expert guidance on a wide range of human resources matters. In this role you will independently manage complex HR processes, ensure compliance with University, State, NCAA, ACC, and federal requirements, and help create an exceptional employee experience across the department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a primary HR consultant to Athletics leadership, supervisors, coaches, and employees on personnel actions, compensation, benefits, payroll, performance management, and employee relations matters.
  • Provide operational HR support for permanent employees, temporary staff, student employees, visitors, and no-pay appointments.
  • Oversee temporary and student employment programs, including appointments, onboarding, compliance requirements, and ongoing administration.
  • Lead the department’s performance management process, including supervisor training, guidance, compliance monitoring, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and maintain HR reports and analytics, including detailed reporting required for NCAA and ACC compliance.
  • Research and analyze compensation and salary market data to support workforce planning and compensation decisions.
  • Manage personnel records and assist with public records requests while ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
  • Evaluate HR processes and procedures, recommend improvements, and develop documentation that enhances efficiency, consistency, and service delivery.
  • Partner with University Human Resources to ensure alignment with institutional policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Coordinate employee engagement and onboarding initiatives that support a positive workplace culture and employee experience.
  • Serve as a key operational backup to the Assistant Athletic Director for Human Resources.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible human resources experience, including the development, implementation, application, and interpretation of HR policies and practices related to position management, employee relations, performance management, and recruitment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated success managing multiple priorities, complex workloads, and competing deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Capacity to analyze information, identify solutions, and resolve issues while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Judgment to evaluate complex situations, make independent decisions, and address employee relations matters with discretion and professionalism.
  • Ability to build productive working relationships and communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, coaches, and senior leaders.
  • Skill in facilitating difficult conversations, resolving workplace concerns, and navigating competing perspectives.
  • Commitment to handling confidential and sensitive information in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using PeopleSoft Human Resources Management System or similar enterprise HR systems.
  • Knowledge of University of North Carolina System policies and procedures.
  • Human resources experience within intercollegiate athletics or another complex, highly regulated environment.
