The City of Raleigh Fire Department is looking for a skilled and motivated Senior Fleet Maintenance Specialist to help keep our fire engines, ladders, rescues, and support vehicles ready for action. In this part-time role, you’ll perform hands-on maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide range of emergency vehicles and equipment. Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Performs routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on fire apparatus, emergency vehicles, and support equipment
  • Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and implement effective solutions
  • Maintains accurate service records and documentation for all vehicles and equipment
  • Ensures all apparatus meet safety standards and are ready for emergency response
  • Collaborates with team members and other departments to support fleet operations
  • Recommends and assist with improvements to vehicle performance, reliability, and safety

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with 6 months training beyond High School Level in Automotive Repair or related field, and 3 to 5 years’ experience in automotive repair, vehicle electronics, or a related field

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Automotive Service Excellence certifications


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with fire apparatus or other emergency vehicles
  • Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, vehicle electronics, air conditioning diagnosis/repair, and air brake systems

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment, vehicle, or in a shop environment. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment.

Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
