Essential Functions

50% CASE MANAGEMENT
Case Management services will take a large portion of this worker’s time. This worker will assist the Social Worker III’s in assuring that required documentation is in place for case files involving adults receiving various Adult Services. This worker will provide services designed to offer assistance to individuals for whom DSS has been appointed representative payee, including assurance of the appropriate use of income for the client’s needs, and strengthening the client’s basic skill in money management. Activities include counseling to enable the individual to recognize, understand, and cope with problems and conflicts in regard specifically to such areas as household management, consumer affairs, family life, alcoholism, drug addiction, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and school related problems. Such counseling is also designed to help individuals independently utilize community resources, including other social services: take advantage of natural support systems; and achieve an adequate level of functioning within the family. Also included is arranging for other services when needed to support the provision of individual and family adjustment services; diagnostic psychological study and evaluation necessary to determine the appropriate plan of service; activities associated with fulfilling the agency's responsibility to serve as representative payee for individual clients; and social development through therapeutic groups as a part of a service plan to give individuals opportunities for participation in structured group activities focused on helping them cope with personal problems, develop capacities for more adequate social functioning and relieve social isolation.

At times, providing transportation is necessary to support the service plan when alternative transportation is unavailable.

20% OUTREACH
After applying the criteria for screening to Adult Protective Services intake reports, there are times when a case does not require screening in but it would be beneficial for Outreach or Information and Referral to be considered as an option. A home visit to do more of a “welfare check” on the situation can be assigned to this worker who will then offer information about community resources, assist with referrals to those resources, or report back that this situation does indeed rise to the level of Adult Protective Services. Documentation of efforts to locate and assist shall be made and kept with the original intake report.

15% SUPERVISE FOSTER CARE VISITS
This worker has direct contact with children in foster care, their parents and / or caretakers, and the resource parents. During parent / child visits, this worker provides direct and indirect supervision, communicating with the participants to encourage positive parenting. When transporting children in foster care to medical or therapeutic appointments, this worker has contact with the service providers.

10% APS INTAKE
Worker will receive calls from a variety of sources regarding allegations of abuse, neglect and exploitation of disabled adults. Information will be entered into the intake form and screened with a supervisor to see if the allegations meet the criteria to screen in or out and to assist in the determination of the need for outreach or information and referral.

5% MISCELLANEOUS
Worker may also be used to represent the Unit when requests are made for someone to come and explain the purpose of the unit and the services provided. This may involve manning booths, speaking to various classes at the schools or community college, civic organizations, etc.

As with all other employees, if a disaster should threaten or occur in the county and there is a need to open a shelter, this worker will be expected to perform whatever duties assigned by the Director or by his or her representative.
