What you will do:
Burlington Recreation and Parks provide a diverse range of programs that enhances the well-being of our residents. Besides just being fun, Burlington's parks, programs and services provide opportunities to improve physical and mental health, develop our youth, focus on the environment and make a positive impact on our city.
This position involves routine equipment operation for maintaining park grounds and athletic fields. The employee operates various tools and machinery, including trucks, mowers, sprayers, spreaders, and hand tools. Judgment is required to adhere to City guidelines and determine acceptable maintenance conditions. The role also involves manual labor for landscaping and grounds upkeep, with occasional assistance in maintaining athletic fields as needed.

- Equipment Maintenance: Ensures mowers and other operational equipment are properly maintained; conducts minor repairs around the park as needed.
- Groundskeeping Operations: Mows, trims, and weeds various City grounds including parks, right-of-ways, traffic islands, and creek banks.
- Public Engagement: Responds to inquiries from the public, providing helpful information.
- Facility Cleanliness: Empties trash receptacles and maintains clean bathroom facilities.
- Routine Equipment Care: Replenishes fuel, sharpens mower blades and reels, checks oil and filters, greases equipment, replaces weed eater strings, and washes machinery.
- Landscaping & Horticulture: Assists with landscaping and horticultural projects, including planting, watering, pruning, and mulching around ball fields and other park facilities.
- Additional Responsibilities: Performs other related duties as required.
- Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Grounds Maintenance Expertise: Strong understanding of the requirements and best practices for maintaining recreation and park facilities.
- Landscape Care Proficiency: Knowledge of landscape maintenance techniques and strategies.
- Chemical Application Knowledge: Familiarity with proper chemical use and application for groundskeeping.
- Equipment Operation Skills: Proficient in operating a variety of equipment including mowers, tractors, trucks, leaf blowers, and weed eaters.
- Groundskeeping Techniques: Skilled in tasks such as seeding, strawing, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, and raking.
- Collaboration & Communication: Ability to foster effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
- Instruction Follow-Through: Capable of following and executing supervisor instructions effectively.
- Independent Work Ability: Able to work independently, managing tasks without direct supervision.
- Maintenance Observation: Skilled at identifying and reporting maintenance needs for grounds and landscaping.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalency and considerable work experience in the maintenance of parks and recreation ground facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.
- Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned, and be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment.
- Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts.
- This employee is also subject to noise, vibration, oils, and extreme heat. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
